All pet ID methods are not equal. Read further to learn why Collar Tags are the SAFEST Pet ID Tags available
An important word about Pet ID Tag marking methods
All Pet ID Tags are subject to some amount of friction. The text on your pet’s tag must be deeply engraved into the tag material. Laser “engraving” sounds cool, but: Trust me, after 50 years I’m an expert in the field. For a Pet ID Tag laser “engraving” is not the way to go. Laser “engraving” only burns the text into the first few microns of the tags surface, it does not go deep into the tag material, and thus text created with the method wears off quickly. One Trustpilot reviewer told me one of the numbers of his phone was gone in just two weeks.
Only diamond engraving under high pressure, or stamping methods, are going to hold up over time on your Pet’s ID Tag. If your pet’s tag text is no longer legible the tag is worthless. Buying Pet ID Tag with shallow text that will wear off is a waste of money—and could end up costing you your pet.

Any and all Traditional Hanging Tags
- Subject to friction and doomed to fail in time
- Rings and Hooks will wear out
- Hole in tag will wear through
- Tag text will be erased as tag swings against other tags and collar hardware
- Can get caught on things (in chain link fences, between deck boards, in-floor heater grates, food rack, etc.)
Anodized Aluminum Hanging Tags
- Look good the day you buy them
- Micro-thin color coating quickly wears off
- Tag text lasts about 6 months on active dog
- Will discolor light colored pet fur
- The worst metal for a pet ID tag (popular because it cheap, soft and thus easy to mark)
Stainless Steel Hanging Tags
- A durable metal but like all hanging tags, subject to friction
- Ring or hook will fail in time
- Hole in tag will wear through in time
- Hard to engrave with off the shelf engraving equipment (leaves fine hair thin lines that don’t last)
Plastic Hanging Tags
- If properly made can be an excellent ID tag
- Provide excellent readability
- Superior to Aluminum tags with regards to longevity
- Subject to friction and doomed to fail in time but can last many years
- Must be made of high quality, u.v. stable plastics 1/8 inch thick
- Must have a stainless steel eyelet in attaching hole
Microchips
- Highly recommended
- But no substitute for id tag on a pet’s collar
- CollarTag gets your pet returned within hours
- Chip information can take a long time, days, weeks, months, even years
- When a pet goes missing your heart will be in pain until you get a call and that call won’t come quickly
